Previous Construction Experience:
I have previous residential construction experience under my father and our family company in the Metro-Detroit area (Macomb, Oakland, Wayne counties), his main expertise is in kitchen and bath remodel, as well as flooring. I learned countless amounts of construction information including scheduling, estimating, and jobsite layout for the projects we worked on, in small scale. In my youth I was the "tape-measure girl", up until high school when I entered in Architectural Drafting as a class. I helped him create drawings for each project as well as utilizing those drawings to better help the clients see the type of space they had to work with, from an interior design prospective. During my time working with my father I was also exposed to the bidding process, even though my father was mostly residential, he occasionally did work for local churches, schools, and the like. Once I entered Michigan State and began studying construction management full-time, I transitioned my role within the company to marketing and client relations, as I could do both of those jobs remotely from East Lansing.
At Michigan State, our program has both an emphasis on commercial and residential construction; due to my ever expanding need to understand both sides of the story, I specialized in commercial construction so that I could get a full-time job in the commercial sector as well. It was extremely important to me to understand both residential and commercial construction and the trials and tribulations of both sectors of the industry.
